Samsung gives phones point and click

Convergence has arrived. Samsung’s SCH-V960 now has a mouse. I’ll let the picture speak for itself.

“Users can point the cursor and click directly on icons on MyScreen, similar interface to that on a PC environment, and gain direct access to frequently used menus such as photo album, messaging, and music menu. Users can also use the Optical Joystick to easily scroll through the play list while listening to their music.”

I’m curious about the usability that they discovered from using an “n optical joystick.” They say that it breaks down the conventional directional model, however, I don’t know what the benefits of that are? With directional movement, the person is allowed precision and assurance of their selection. I feel their are strained with greater concentration on navigating the curor to the appropriate selection.

Another question to mind is how this compares to the Blackberry Pearl with their roller joystick. Interesting none the less.

I was a bit flippant with the comments in the initial post.

Personally, I’d be a bit sceptical of a pointer on a mobile device. One of the great things about a directional button is that it’s relatively easy to control when you’re on the move (walking, in a vehicle that’s got a fair bit of motion). I imagine it would be easy for the pointer to “slip” when users move unexpectedly (which happens all the time when you’re on the go).

Though I’d like to have a hands-on play with the device before I passed final judgement.
