If I paid a dollar every time Horace Luke of HTC says ‘simple’ in this product launch I’d be down about $132. Hyperbole aside, it’s an interesting piece of design.

Cool stuff.
“I wanted to try to take advantage of spatial reasoning and spatial memory to make it easier to find and navigate stuff. Let the user see the scope of information available. Start by showing the big picture. When it makes sense, let it behave more like real-world objects. You can normally pick up [...]

InUseful published a usability report on the iPhone.
“What is it then that makes the iPhone different? Most importantly, it has removed one level of abstraction by allowing the user to act on objects using the finger directly on the phone’s surface. The difference between this and having to press keys on a keyboard and watch [...]
Now that developers can legitimately create applications for the iPhone, Apple has updated it’s Human Interface Guidelines to cover a broader scope.
Officially you need to register for the iPhone developers’ center to download, but the document is also available elsewhere.

Barbara Ballard’s mobile patterns library has become a wiki for all to contribute to and help develop.
“Designing mobile user interfaces grows ever more interesting. Device and network capabilities are improving, platforms are giving us more features to help the user, privacy and security are becoming more important, and device proliferation is both increasing and decreasing. [...]
“The iPhone platform elegantly solves the design problem of small screens by greatly intensifying the information resolution of each displayed page. Small screens, as on traditional cell phones, show very little information per screen, which in turn leads to deep hierarchies of stacked-up thin information—too often leaving users with “Where am I?” puzzles. Better to [...]
“The level of communication between users and their electronic devices has been largely limited to a pointing interface. To date, a few common extensions to the pointing interface exist. They include single- versus double-click or tap devices and devices that allow users to hold down a button while moving the pointing focus, such as mice, [...]

“Adaptability of the interface, to allow for a personalisation of the experience. Here he shows the example of Samsung’s uGo interface for mobile phones (developed jointly with Adobe), an adaptive user interface that automatically responds to the user’s environments. The main screen displays a landmark picture that changes based on where you are and what [...]
“The single most important concept to master when designing mobile device interfaces is “context”. The context in which an application is used and the context of how information is input are both key issues; each must be understood before a well crafted design may be implemented. When these two notions of context are explored, it [...]
“This document introduces you to the iPhone environment and how it shapes the user experience of iPhone content. Then, it explains how to design a superlative user interface for your web content so it displays and works well on iPhone. It does this by first examining different types of iPhone content and exploring how you [...]
John Maeda muses about the rewards of action.
”...I like to think of this in terms of ROI: return on interaction. With the new iPod nano—or any MP3-playing device, for that matter—ROI is increasing in importance. That’s because the challenge is no longer to increase the speed of the bits as they lift off the internal [...]
“The most basic and simplest gesture is pointing, and it is an effective method for most people to communicate with each other, even in the presence of language barriers. However, pointing quickly fails as a way to communicate when the object or concept that a person is trying to convey is not in sight to [...]
